Mental Health Pathways to Wellness

For the past few generations the month is May in the United States is officially known as Mental Health Month. There are tens of millions who suffer through mental problems and the Mental Health America organization and its branches, such as Mental Health Memphis, from coast to coast observe May by having local events, reach out to the media and do mental screenings.  They put the word out how it’s vitally important for a healthy person to be both physically and mentally fit.

The theme for Mental Health America in 2013 is called Pathways to Wellness which helps inform the public on the best ways to improve their overall wellness.  Wellness can be very subjective, but essentially means living a productive and full life.   There are basic guidelines for wellness which can further your life by greatly reduce sickness and illness.  If you do get sick while you are living well, the odds are you are much more likely to recover.  Wellness is both physical and mental and they need to work in unison.  Maintaining an optimistic outlook when you are sick, like knowing you will get through it, will greatly increase your chances of recovering.  Likewise when you are physically fit you have a more positive outlook on life.

Wellness means a lot more than not being sick.  It includes social, mental and general well being.  Mental health is a mandatory component of your wellness and all around health.   A person’s wellness and health is intrinsically tied to spiritual, physical and psychological health.

No matter who we are, we all have to deal with stress every day.  Stress in everyday life, at home and at work can be trying at times.  When a person strengthens their psychological well being it will greatly help in dealing with these stresses.  It is easier said than done, but the basic ways to increase your wellness is by exercising a few times a week, eating healthy foods, having a healthy sense of self worth, getting enough rest, emotional awareness,  having people to rely on and talk to like friends and family and learning to cope effectively with stressors.

These actions include a checkup for mental health.  This is similar to getting a physical from a doctor where they listen to your heart rate and check your blood pressure.  A study which came out recently stated that everyone should ideally get at least one mental health check once a year.  Some doctors actually do this during the physical and ask their patients about their overall eating patterns, exercise routines, lifestyle and how they are doing with their family and job, how their mood is, temper and overall satisfaction with life.  There are also many online screening tools for depression, alcohol abuse, anxiety and other common psychological disorders.

By understanding the overall idea of wellness is to not just limited to the physical aspects of life, but also the spiritual and psychological, can help you improve the quality of your life.   When you become stronger psychologically, by effectively coping with life problems, you will be in a much stronger position to increase your overall sense of well being.

There are a number of outpatient depression programs, as well as psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers who can provide treatment for psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. If you or a loved one is showing signs of a psychological disorder, they should be assessed by a trained mental health professional who can help design a treatment plan that can result in recovery.  Treatment for psychiatric problems can be highly successful.  If live in or around Memphis, TN, call us at 901-682-6136 to schedule an appointment.
